Would the owners consider a recycled glass countertop? These are eco-friendly and comes in lots of colors at a cost comparable with higher Corian or mid-price granite. They mix well with the modern cabinets and hardware and have a unique look that would compliment the stove. They also sparkle quite a bit which would be benefit a darkish kitchen.

Great suggestion. Vetrazzo produces some gorgeous material.

I think that bamboo butcher block countertops are so beautiful. I'm not sure that they would be as easy to take care of, or resilient, as other countertop materials, but I love how they look.

Two things I would do is replace the wall faucet with single valve sink deck unit. This will eliminate major labor for any other backsplash arraingment. I would also move that outlet up so the bottom of the cover plate is even with the bottom of the window stool.

Because of the length I would actually go with a bullnose laminate countertop.with integral backsplash. they have some great off white or yellowy colors. Most of the wood grains are not so good and the colors look bleached out especially in the maple aspen range. Specify Nevamar first, and Wilsonart dead last. WA scratches by looking at it.

The bullnosing would accent the roundness of the vintage appliances. The durability has been road tested. Installation is straight forward.

well, if you're near a Menards, they sell solid surface you can install yourself (like corian), or you should do a concrete countertop.

Replacement Counters.com has a great selection of many countertop styles. http://www.replacementcounters.com/. I really like the look and feel of quartz and plan on going that route when we start our kitchen remodel next month. Good luck!
